Chapter Six

Peter

A light kiss to my temple and Thomas’ softly uttered, “wake up,” pulled me into awareness. Within a fraction of a second, I was fully alert. “Where are we?”

“Williams Lake.” He pointed out the window. “Tim Horton’s. We make a pit stop and then we get into another Hydro truck.”

We were going to owe favors to everyone from Prince George to Vancouver.

“Did your dad help this person as well?”

Thomas smiled. “Nope. Just a good Samaritan who loves company. He’ll take us to Cache Creek.” He nudged me. “I’ve got to go because I drank my entire coffee.”

Darkness still shrouded the world, broken by the bright-pink fluorescent lights of the parking lot. Snow still fell, but not sideways anymore.

“The wind?” I unclipped my safety belt and opened the door. Within moments, I had the answer to my question. Calm enveloped me along with the falling snow. Once Thomas was beside me, we hurried into Timmie’s. Never had I been so grateful for this great Canadian staple. I made a beeline for the nearest restroom, did my business quickly, and came out. Damn, should have let Thomas go first. He was, after all, the one who’d drunk all his coffee.

“You get fresh coffees while I freshen up.” His eyes were dull in the store's light.

“You want something to eat?”

“We’ve got Mom’s sandwiches, but I wouldn’t say no to a maple donut.”

At least his taste in donuts was a little saner than his taste in ice cream. Tiger tail. I still laughed at my initial reaction to the orange cream and black licorice.

I looked around for Gisele so I could order something for her as well, but she was nowhere to be found.

The young woman behind the counter wore a hijab and a huge smile. A little too bright for... Oh, hell, what difference did the time make?

I handed her the mugs. “Could you rinse them out? Then one latte and one Double Double.” Not my favorite, but a little sugar and milk never hurt anyone. “Oh, and one maple dip and one vanilla with sprinkles.” Yeah, I loved my sprinkles. She rang in the order and I tapped my card then dropped five toonies in the tip jar. Her eyes widened. “You’re working. I’m appreciative.”

Her eyes narrowed, and for a moment I wondered if she recognized me. Instead she gave a nod of thanks and took our mugs over to the sink. By the time she handed me the coffees and donuts, Gisele had reappeared.

“Clive’ll take you as far as Cache Creek. We’re still trying to work out how to get you to Hope. In Hope you’re going to have to find your own way. But you’ll be at the TransCanada so I’m sure you’ll find someone there. Maybe even a bus, if they’re still running.

I pulled out my wallet and started counting bills. My tendency to carry a lot of cash drove Thomas nuts, but today it was a good habit to have.

Gisele scowled. “What the fuck you think you’re doing?”

Stunned, I stilled my hands.
